Index Option Trading
An index is the statistical measurement of change in the value of specific group of underlying assets in an economy. The options on these indices (the call or put option on an index of a market) are termed as index options and their trade is called index option trading. The underlying asset of the index option is not a single one but a group of assets. In financial markets there are different indexes with global and regional out look.
The most famous indices are S&P 500 Index (SPX), Dow Jones Industrial Average Index (DJX) and Nasdaq-100 Index (NDX). The options on these indexes are settled in cash, as their physical trade is not possible in market, so index trading is conducted on the current value of the specific index at the specific time.
The most important and outstanding index trading platforms are AMEX, CBOE, ISE, NYSE Arca, and PHLX. The most of the index trading is carried on through CBOE. In index trading value is determined on the daily basis and an index option cannot be exercised before its expiration. The majority of these financial instruments are traded in European style.
In index options trade the investor has to predict the overall direction of an underlying market, whether it will go up or go down from a base point. The index option trading give you the opportunity of less liquid trade with diversification as compared to investing in a single stock. It gives a less fluctuate trading as compared to other options ,as the affects of a surprising news or eruptive incidents are limited in index trading. The indices are more stable as compared to the individual stocks.
Index trading provides you with high pay out margin and risk of capital loss is limited as compared to capital gains. The achievement of profit gaining from an index option contract increases significantly, if you use a strategy to place your bet.
