Currency Option Trading
The exchange of currency in forex is called currency trading. The options on currencies like USD, JPY, and Euro are termed as currency options or forex options. The currency is traded in pairs on forex platforms. Currency option is a contract between the buyer and seller to exchange underlying currency, the currency option awards the buyer or seller mandatory power to buy (call option) or sell (put option) an underlying currency at the expiration of option contract but the investor is not obliged to so. The actual exchange of a currency in currency option trading is not carried out, the investor takes his payout on his option or loses premium at the expiration of option contract.
The value of a currency in forex exchange is determined by the demand for a specific currency in the market. The demand for a currency may be for different purposes such as speculation, hedging and conversion. The commercial and investment banks of different countries run the forex options market and currency traders, hedgers, speculators and portfolio managers are the main players in currency options trading. Some times central banks also participate in forex options trading.
The forex options trading has become the most liquid and the largest market by volume in financial markets and it has the true global scenario. The majority of currency option trading is carried out through OTC (Over The Counter) trade. The forex options are traded in standard exchanges in a small portion. Another way of forex options trading is the futures. The investors bet on currency futures in future options market. The binary option trading on currency pairs is also becoming popular form of currency trading.
The currency option trading has a huge payout portfolio and limited risk scenario as compared to the spot forex trading with high leverage and liquidity. As in option trading, you only bet on the direction of a currency value in forex to gain a high prefixed amount of payout.
